Brain Health: We Are What We Eat

Hi friends! It has been a LONG time since we’ve had a new post. A lot has happened since the last post–both good and unwarranted. But, I am so happy to be back! Thank you so much for circling back to The Wellness Queue. Let’s get straight to it!

Are you experiencing brain fog? Finding it hard to concentrate? Does your memory seem to be spotty? I honestly can say yes to all of the above. With “gradschool amnesia”, spending so much time at the computer for work, and increased stress from “life lifing”, I noticed that my brain function was NOT up to par. I incorporated some of the spices and herbs below into my daily regimen (tea, coffee, foods) and noticed a huge difference.

  • Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Ginger, Cayenne Pepper, Black Pepper: boosts/enhances memory
  • Saffron: antidepressant effect
  • Turmeric: powerful antioxidant, decreases plaques in the brain (plaques in the brain result in Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia)
  • Cinnamon: lowers blood sugar, improves memory and attention
  • Garlic and Oregano: boosts blood flow to the brain
  • Paprika: protects neurons reducing Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cumin: lowers stress response, improves recall

Our brain is our garden. The roots are nurtured by the foods that we eat.

BRAIN FOOD THAT BOOSTS ENERGY AND FOCUS

  • Avocado and Broccoli: improves cognition
  • Dark Chocolate: improves focus and energy, fights stress
  • Water: improves all bodily functions, quick thinking, and focus
  • Almonds: helps brain process information and make connections
  • Green Tea: improves mental speed and accuracy

Food For Thought: Dyes (i.e. Red #), processed foods and sugars (chips, cookies, deli, boxed meals, hot dogs, etc.), juice, soda, and high fructose corn syrup, just to name a few, can negatively affect brain function, contribute to ADD/ADHD in children, and increase risk for Alzheimer’s Disease.
